FIVE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO STOP URINARY INCONTINENCE

Effective ways to stop urinary incontinence DO exist.  Understanding this fact can provide emotional relief to the many who suffer everyday with this often embarrassing and frustrating condition.

That said, If you are one of the many who are affected by urinary incontinence, or are close to someone who is, it is important to understand that you absolutely should see your physician regarding this condition. While there are effective ways to stop urinary incontinence, it is crucial  to remember that incontinence is usually a symptom of something else. Understanding the root cause of the incontinence is always important.

Below, we have shared five ways you can stop your urinary incontinence.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

One way to effectively stop urinary incontinence is to maintain a healthy weight. You should speak with your physician to ascertain your ideal weight and determine a plan to reach it.  Overweight individuals tend to have weaker pelvic muscles.  Additionally, excess weight puts greater pressure on the bladder. Both of these factors increase incontinence. Embark on healthy eating and lose weight slowly and sensibly.

Stay Hydrated

Contrary to what you may believe, drinking an appropriate amount of water each day will NOT increase incontinence. In fact, it will help control it. When you drink water you prevent dehydration which often results in constipation and increased incontinence. Experts suggest drinking six to eight glasses each day. That said, guzzling large amounts is unwise.  Drink consistently throughout the day. Wonder if you are drinking enough? Check the color of your urine. Light colored urine indicates that you are hydrated while darker yellow may indicate a need to drink more.

Exercise Regularly

While you know the benefits of regular exercise to your overall health, you may not be aware that it can also help control urinary incontinence.  General physical activity will help your maintain a healthy weight. Begin an exercise program that includes activities which you enjoy. Maybe make a walking date with a friend - summer is over the the weather is cooling off.  Take advantage and get outside! Love music? Dance around your house! Or, enroll in a new activity of your choice. Don’t forget to do your kegels!  These pelvic floor strengthening exercises definitely help with incontinence.

Eat Healthy

A well-balanced diet is always a good idea, but when you suffer from incontinence there are some extra steps you can take.  First, make sure your diet contains an adequate amount of fiber. Some simple steps to increasing your fiber intake include replacing “white” foods (like bread and pasta) with their whole wheat counterparts. Also, increase your daily intake of fruits and veggies.  Additionally, there are some foods it is wise to avoid. For example, caffeine can be incredibly irritating to your bladder. As such, consider limiting caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, cola and even chocolate. And, limit or avoid alcohol, which is a diuretic. Quite simply, drinking it causes you to urinate more frequently.  Of course, you should discuss your diet with your physician. He or she may have some helpful suggestions and can ensure you are getting all of the vitamins and nutrients you need to remain healthy.

Stop Smoking

There is no doubt that smoking is detrimental to your health.  But, did you know quitting can also affect urinary incontinence? It has been shown that smoking irritates the bladder.  Additionally, smoking can cause coughing, which adds pressure to the bladder often resulting in leakage. If you are a smoker, cutting down can alleviate your incontinence symptoms and improve your overall health; quitting completely should be your goal.

As you can see, all of the tips shared have something in common.  Adopting them will absolutely make you healthier. Additionally, they will help you control your incontinence.  Those of us who suffer, or know someone who does, recognize that every little bit helps.
